Update and Thanks from the Director
⊆ July 26th, 2006 by courtney | ˜I can’t even begin to express all of the thoughts which are going through my mind right now. So I will keep this brief and to the point. I learned of Fringe last April when I returned to DC from a tour. With a solid year to work with, I began to plan the risky task of writing and producing a one-man show.
As fate would have it, I finally hashed out ideas and wrote the first scene of my piece three months before opening night. Without a staged reading, financial support, or even a finished script mid-rehearsals, this expected one-man cabaret soon transformed into a 12-person musical-play!
The past few months of mounting this project have truly been difficult. Even more difficult when one attempts to make the process look effortless, when in actuality, he’s watching the sun rise consistently for two weeks. I’ve learned alot about people and how they operate under stress. I’ve learned how to make the most of a small space and making small marketing ploys pay off. I’ve learned how kind-hearted some people can be and how important extension cords are. I’ve learned what it’s like to be an actor sitting at the director’s end of the table. In the end, why I do this artsy and bohemian thing that I and so many others do, has become clearer. I think I speak for most of us when I say that it’s because we CHOOSE to do this and we love absolutely love doing it. End of story.
This script isn’t going to win a Tony next season, yet its message is being received far better than anticipated. As I sit and watch this show take place night after night, I feel like a soccer mom watching her kids at play. My cast brings this zany piece to life and my small production staff ensures that it runs smoothly. The response that we’ve received from the Fringe theatre community and other supporters has been extremely appreciated! I just rearranged our set yesterday to increase our seating capacity and, yet, we are still selling out. I can’t say THANK YOU enough, especially to the other Fringe artists who are supportive of our show as well as each other’s! I wish each of you an exciting conclusion to your Fringe experience and best of luck in all future endeavors!
Thank You!
