The Women of Brewster Place

Joel Markowitz interviews Monique Midgette and Eleasha Gamble

The Women of Brewster Place is based on Gloria Naylor’s 1993 bestselling novel which chronicled the lives and dreams of ten African American women living in a decaying housing project in the 1970’s. Tim Acito’s musical adaptation has been brought into being thanks to a unique partnership between Arena Stage and Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre.
As Washington gets ready to see this latest work from director Molly Smith, we decided to devote a 3 part series to understanding what it takes to develop a major musical. In part 1, local favorites Eleasha Gamble and Monique Midgette, starring as Wanda and Kiswana Browne, talk about the audiences in Atlanta, changes needed to bring the show into the smaller Kreeger Theatre, remember back on their favorite local roles, and serenade us with songs from the show’s powerful score.

Nice interview. I particularly liked the singing at the end.
