"The Studio" is one of the most original productions I have ever attended. It speaks eloquently about the difficulty of balancing inspiration and perspiration in the creative process. I highly recommend this show and predict it will last in your memory longer than most theatrical events.

For people who laugh at lines such as "Don't dance the steps, let the steps dance you," the word that begins with "ignor" and ends with "ant" comes to mind. And anyone who thinks that Anderson overacts is totally missing one of the major points of the show. I won't mention that point because I don't want to spoil it for the people who plan to see the show.

My friend Lina and I attended the first performance of THE STUDIO. At the conclusion of the ninety minute performance we were on our feet enthusiastically cheering what had just played out in front of us. This hybrid of scripted theatre married to dance worked splendidly for us. As matter of fact would regard THE STUDIO as "MUST SEE" theatre. My friend and I would also rank this Signature presentation as one of the truly exceptionally stellar
theatre outings of 2007. ... I concur with just about everything Ms. Jackson has written about the show. Especially her opening sentence. Regarding the role of Emil the choreographer is where I differ a bit. I think the script and Stephen Anderson playing Emil give us all we need to really know about this manically egocentric individual. ... This gem of a show puts the spotlight on the creative process in a manner that has not been seen in these parts in a good long while. ... Don't be left out of the loop around the water cooler when folks are talking about this truly wonderful event. Beg, borrow, or steal the time to see THE STUDIO at Signature Theatre.

Very nice review from someone who's been at the barre... I "just" swing dance. For those who enjoy dance -- and those who do not -- this play is well done despite or partially because of the minimalist set. Am not sure if this play can translate to other arenas of life or is meant to -- although it certainly makes the "point" that challenging work that's passion-driven (don't we all seek this?) takes much out of us. For those who don't attend ballet, know that you'd not see this kind of energy (and talent) without several intermissions and these dancers keep the energy up pretty much non-stop. What's unstated in this play is left to the imagination -- and we can fill in those gaps. Enjoy!

What a wonderful review. So much artistry in the descriptions - you feel the emotion of the performance, and you definitely feel compelled to attend. Well done!

A wonderful review! I saw the show in previews and found it to be highly entertaining and thought provoking. I've already recommended it to all my friends and have my tickets to see it again in two weeks. Bravo to the wonderful cast and overall production

Excellent review! I agree with almost everything except about Stephen Lee Anderson's portrayal of Emil. It would have been easy for him to camp-up or overact the part, but I found his approach delicious. I got that"oh boy, I know somebody like that" feeling.
