After seeing the show and reading this, the Post and the City Paper review, seems like this reviewer didn't quite get the point of the show. I would be worried if Deal and Ingvarsson were jumping with joy about their condition of servitude. It would be completely wrong if the cast appeared to be "enjoying" acting the show.
Genet is a figure of classic French absurdest theater and you can't expect some snipit of his life on stage - this show is about abstract expression of ideas and emotions around servitude, and as the City Paper comments, Scena does an impressive job carrying the audience along in a surprisingly realistic way through this maze of concepts.
I'll admit the program was a bit of an embarrassment, but these types of mistakes happen for small companies like this.
I'd hope at least folks will read the other reviews in addition to the above before deciding to see this show.

While I did not see the Scena's production of Genet's THE MAIDS, I had to write after reading Ms. Cane's hysterical line, "Genet fails to deliver". Since criticism is the expression of a subjective opinion, I don't fault Ms. Cane for having hers. Once having expressed it, however, it should lead the reader to consider the source and view with extreme skepticism any other opinion that this reviewer has to offer.
