News flash! Police officers can be complicated, flawed, and even corrupt human beings at times. While that revelation may not strike you as particularly compelling or controversial, it had more force in 1976 when Cops, the new production at American Century Theater, was first staged. Absent that impact, the audience is left with an earnest and professional production of a flawed play that, while containing moments of humor and tension, ultimately amounts to a misfire. (more…)

A Tisket, a Tasket– only the marvelous vocals of Ella Fitzgerald could turn a children’s play song about losing a yellow basket into a scat-wielding marvel and only the unassumingly delightful Tina Fabrique could make it swing. In this upbeat, sassy production Ella, at the newly revamped temporary home of Arena Stage, Ms. Fabrique hits her stride channeling the energy and pizzazz of legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald with enough bee-bop to shimmy across the innovatively designed new stage.

In an era when plastic surgery is routinely used to sculpt face and body, it seems positively quaint that a young woman’s primary dream of self-improvement would involve elocution lessons. Yet the plight of the flower girl Eliza Doolittle at the hands of her mentor/tormentor Henry Higgins possesses timeless charms that are beautifully displayed by the current My Fair Lady revival now playing at the Kennedy Center.
