Paula, I think everyone agrees with what you said, but the reality is that majority of theatre-goers base their individual ticket purchases on the reviews, especially the reviewer of record.

Barbara, that's what people should do any way. Just make a bee line to whatever they want to see, and formulate their own opinions. I like reading the observations of reviewers (critics) and noncritics as well, but that's about it. I'm amazed that a lot of people decide to go see something based on what some critic said. Even the critics don't always agree with each other.

I've seen Ace twice, once in previews and again yesterday and enjoyed it even more the second time, and found it even more powerful the second time. Yesterday's Washington Post, Saturday, Sep 13, included this letter on page A15, "Believe What You See - After reading The Post's critical review of Signature Theatre's musical, "Ace" ("Signature's 'Ace' Doesn't Earn Its Wings," Style, Sep 4), we almost canceled our tickets. Luckily, we decided to go to the Sept. 5 show. Two quick hours later, we joined the entire audience in a loud, standing ovation for the cast and orchestra. All five in our group found the musical entertaining, fast-moving and not hard to understand notwithstanding staff writer Peter Marks's comments that the plot was contrived and superficial. Gosh, it's a musical, Peter. (signed) Jack and Casey Tarr - McLean"

I hope lots of theater goers read this letter in the Washington Post and make a bee line to the Signature Theatre to see "Ace" and form their own opinion(s).

I saw it in previews, and having heard the changes made, I am very much looking forward to seeing it again. The boy who plays the lead character is very natural, and, as I learned, is the same age as the character he's playing. Amazing job by both those young actors. The adults may take the "back seat" but their performances are wonderful as well. What a previlege to see that level of professionals. If people don't go because of the negative reviews, they are missing out.

Well I went to see the show this afternoon. Some of the reviews being what they've been and the fact that there are so many other fine theater offerings right now I wasn't sure that I was going to fit this show into my schedule. However out of a combination of curiosity and a desire to support Signature I decided to see the show today. The surprise is that I really really enjoyed the show!!! Yeah its got some flaws but even then its pretty good. (Hey you know I loved Wicked even though I thought the story line was extremely flawed.) The performances are great, the set, costumes and lighting are all very well done. (Actually I thought that all of the production aspects of the show were outstanding.) Folks should go see this if for no other reason then to see Angelina Kelly delightful performance as the young Emily. I suspect that before the show moves to another venue some more changes will be made and the show will be tightened up a bit more. Honestly though if I had seen this show on Broadway I wouldn't have been disappointed!!!
