Beware is you are planning to see Fantasia in The Color Purple. Not all shows are starring Fantasia even though that is what is advertised. Overall I would have to say that it was OK. Maybe Fantasia playing Celie would have made the difference. I don't know, but I was very dissappointed to have tickets to see Fantasia in the Color Purple and not be able to.

I totally agree with Paula's comments above. I saw the show in NYC several years ago and enjoyed this production every bit as much as I did the NYC production. It's a top of the line. Try to see it if you can.

This is a must see. It was one of the best I've seen lately. The acting was superb, the singing wonderful (and you feel it). The set and lighting were well done. The sound had a few flaws, but I think that is the nature of that opera house. The orchestra was fantastic. Some areas drag on a bit (Push Da Button, Uh Oh! Any Little Thing) but each offers its own brand of entertainment. Other areas were beautiful such as "African Homeland" where Miss Celie is reading a letter from her sister who is in Africa. For a moment she is transported into a world of natives dancing and regally dressed men and women walking past her, or young warriors preparing for combat. You'll get plenty of good laughs as well, so it's not all a sad drag -- like the movie tended to be. The day I saw this show the audience was wonderful. They were so engaged from start to finish with displays of moans and gasps, to riotous laughter and applause. Every one of the actors I saw the day I went were really strong and convincing in their roles.
