Just pointing out that Bunraku is Japanese puppetry. Haven't seen the show yet, but I'm guessing that Ms. Blanchard may be referring to Noh masks - or a particular style of Noh mask.
Just sayin....

How appropriate that Jayne's first review for DCTS is one that matches its subject with such wonderful resourcefulness and virtuosity.

I saw this show this past Saturday. There was a synopsis in the program that spelled out the action fairly well. I read the story, and saw it for the first time at the Harman. That helped me tremendously. You've got to know the story, though. Shakespeare has a lot of action going on in his plays, so this company did a good job in conveying that through movement and silence - not an easy task. I thought the set was wonderful, and used effectively for so many purposes. the music and costuming was beautiful.

I loved this production, absolutely stunning. I've heard that they tightened up the timing and performances since I saw it so I can't even imagine how great it is now.
I went in without knowing the story very well hoping to see if Synetic could tell the story effectively and I think they did. That being said, I think the production would be more enjoyable at least having a reasonable understanding of it (they include a synopsis in the playbill that would suffice).
Kudos Synetic!
