About This Program

In 1945, Harper’s Bazaar magazine published A Child’s Christmas in Wales, and in 1952, Dylan Thomas lent his voice to the poem in the now-famous Caedmon Records recording, creating a Christmas classic. At this time of economic recession and with our troops overseas, we would be well-served to remember the simple pleasures of youth and share that same spirit of Christmas with others.  As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said in one of his famous Fireside Chats, “there is a special spirit that has warmed our hearts since our earliest childhood – a spirit that brings us close to our homes, our families, our friends and neighbors: the Christmas spirit of ‘peace on earth, good will toward men.’ It is an unquenchable spirit.”

So, whether you ever dreamed of being an “Eskimo-footed arctic marksman” or enjoyed sleighing down “ice-cream hills,” please enjoy this reading of A Child’s Christmas in Wales as you reflect upon “the close and holy darkness” and celebrate the “wool-white bell-tongued ball of holidays” of Christmases past, present, and future.

About the Author

Dylan Thomas, one of the great poets of the twentieth century, was born in Swansea, Wales in 1914.  Inspired by the natural world and the rhythms of human life, he wrote with intense lyricism and emotion. (read more)
