Call for playwrights

Pointless Theatre seeks playwrights with a collaborative spirit and an eye for puppet magic to adapt stories from The Canterbury Tales for a piece that will be performed at Flashpoint in February 2013.

We are looking to select 2-4 playwrights to each adapt a tale into a 5-10 minute scene that takes place in the tavern setting. If you are interested, please send a resume and sample of your writing to Pointless’ Literary Manager Alex Leidy at alex@pointlesstheatre.com.

Experience is great, however, we welcome and encourage those with no experience to apply if they are enthusiastic about working in a team environment and showing the audience a great time.
Actors needed:
Black female: Loves to gossip, comedic edge/timing, older woman

Black female: Praise dancer #1
Black female: Praise dancer #2
Black male: athletic build/stature, appearance of a fitness instructor
Black male: Choir director
The roles are Non-Union and they do not pay.

The production takes place in early August

Master acting class with Brooks Ashmankas, Sat, May 12

Interested in what goes on in the mind of a Broadway actor? Here’s your chance for a sneak peak at the inner workings of theatrical performance—how an actor goes from good to great. Brooks Ashmanskas (John Adams in 1776 at Ford’s Theatre) will present a special master class on Saturday, May 12 from 11am to 1pm at The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts.

Mr. Ashmanskas will work with a group of pre-selected students on songs, monologues, and audition technique. Audience members will gain insight into the actor’s process by watching a master teacher at work and participating in a Q&A session.

Playwrights’ seminar in Miami

Miami’s City Theatre will be offering CityWrights, a weekend seminar for playwrights this June 14-17 at Miami’s EPIC Hotel, presented as a program of City Theatre’s 17th Annual Summer Shorts Festival.  Professional playwrights, early career and emerging playwrights, students, and all writers are welcome to attend.

The seminar will include creative development sessions with playwrights Leslie Ayvazian and Ivan Anderson as well as classes on Copyright laws, collaborative development, playwrights rights, piracy, submitting work, the playwright as director and actor, and a meet-the-publisher session. Christopher Durang will give the keynote address.

Tuition is $325, or $275 for members of the Dramatist’s Guild and $250 for students. You may register here; students should write to CityWrights@citytheatre.com  to register and all attendees can obtain discounted room rates at the EPIC here.

Auditions April 8

Seeking 4-5 actors (2 women, 25-50; 2-3 men, 25-55) for various roles.

Actors will voice (live) a variety of characters; two actors will also be filmed for interactive characters during the play. Auditioners should demonstrate vocal range to play 4-5 different characters each, including potentially Eastern European, Southern US, British, and others.

Actors will be paid a small stipend.

John Feffer’s plays, including last years’ “The Bird”, have each been a “Pick of the Fringe” for the past three consecutive years. This years’ offering is a comedy/drama centers on that most Washingtonian of creatures – the political pundit – and how forces inside and outside his control spiral into a deadly game.  Directed by Doug Krehbel

Rehearsals begin mid-June. Performances: Friday 7/13, Sunday 7/15, Friday 7/20, Saturday 7/28 and Sunday 7/29 at the Goethe Institut (Terrific indoor venue seating close to 100.)

$80,000 – $130,000 grants for devised works

The National Theater Project (NTP)‘s Creation & Touring Grants provide funds for creation and touring of collaborative, devised projects. These grants are highly competitive and are awarded to approximately 6 projects annually. Grants generally range from $80,000 to $130,000. [Read more...]

DC Black Theatre Festival auditions, April 1st

The 2012 DC Black Theatre Festival takes place June 23 – July 1st. According to the audition announcement just received, last year’s festival, which showcased 53 productions plus late night shows, gave work to more than 350 actors.

This year’s auditions will be before 20 playwrights, producers, directors and theatre groups. To be considered, email your headshot and resume here.

The auditions will take place Sunday, April 1, 2012 from noon to 5pm. At  The Performing Arts Training Center, 6925 Willow Street NW, Takoma Park, Washington, DC.

Actors’ Center lottery auditions. Register by March 23

The Actors’ Center, a 30-year-old non-profit membership organization, today announced that it will stage auditions exclusively for Actor’s Center members on April 9 and 10, between 10 am and 4 pm.
