Hungry: Election Year in the Life of One Family, Part 1
by Richard Nelson

The Kennedy Center presents the Public Theater production of a highly anticipated new series of plays written and directed by Tony Award winner Richard Nelson (James Joyce’s The Dead). Just as his triumphant 2013 cycle The Apple Family Plays was tethered to specific moments in American politics, The Gabriels shines an important, probing spotlight on the 2016 political season, with its Washington engagement aptly timed to lead up to Inauguration Day 2017.

Turning our attention to the Gabriel family, who just so happen to be neighbors to the Apples, the three chapters that make up the cycle–HungryWhat Did You Expect?, and Women of a Certain Age–are being created with a core acting company (Meg Gibson, Lynn Hawley, Roberta Maxwell, Maryann Plunkett, Jay O. Sanders, and Amy Warren) this spring, summer, and fall respectively at The Public Theater in New York City. The productions will then be performed in repertory at the Kennedy Center, giving audiences the choice to enjoy them separately or as part of a daylong marathon. Hungry is already garnering rave reviews, and if what the New York Times said about The Apple Family Plays is any indication of The Gabriels‘ cultural impact, you won’t want to miss another “rare and radiant mirror of the way we live.”
