what about Michelle Beck as Ophelia in Shakespeare Theater’s production of “Hamlet”??? That was the most amazing performance of that part I’ve ever seen!
Um, folks. You got used. This is the poster child for what can go wrong with audience choice. It is absolutely not a coincidence that every single award went to a show associated with MetroStage. Not to take anything aware from the wonderful shows and actors that were nominated, but the sheer number of votes is way, way out of proportion.
So, here’s what happened: Someone at the Brain Trust at MetroStage decided to hijack your audience poll as a way of drumming up free advertising for the theater. There is no doubt that’s what happened.
The question is: Did you do it wittingly or unwittingly? If the former, why did you allow yourself to be used? If the latter, do you have any problem with the results?
I loved Meet John Doe! EXCELLENT!
That was uncalled for Will “Can’t disguise my style” S.
PS…it’s Heidi Blickenstaff, not Blickinstaff.
Two of my favorite plays you missed were Synetic Theater’s Macbeth and Shakespeare Theater’s Richard III, the latter with a stellar performance by Geraint Wyn Davies.
from Takoma Park
HEY – WHERE’S SYNETIC’S “ANIMAL FARM” ON YOUR LIST ???
Shoulda been there!
And I’ll take Nancy Robinette over Diva Donna ANYDAY – the former understands NUANCE and layers onstage….
The Mojo Mikybo kids!
Which of your favorites are not on our lists? We’d love to hear.
You know Don, when you compile a list of “Bests,” someone is going to be left off. I have seen every show that Carolee has been in, and many of them – two or three times, and I admire her talent. Her performance in “Parade” was sensational. Without her, “Saving Aimee” would have been “unsave-able.”
The podcast I recorded with Carolee was one of the best interviews I have ever done, and she was delightful. You can hear it at
https://dctheatrescene.com/2007/05/06/coralee-carmello-on-saving-aimee/
As for the best performance DC has ever seen Don- well- that goes to Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean in the Original Broadway production of “Les Miserables,” that premiered here at The Kennedy Center on December 27, 1986, before moving to Broadway on March 12, 1987.
Joel
UM….Carolee Carmello. Best performance DC has ever seen- let alone this year. Joel how could you leave off Carolee?????
Here’s a VERY biased (hint) shout out to Solas Nus’s “Scenes from the Big Picture”
Opinions??
Hello! I personally loved Macbeth by Synetic Theater! Very innovative and thrilling!
Hi Tom:
Check out my Best Musicals of the Year Theatre Schmooze, which will be posted shortly, and I think you’ll be very happy. Also, listen to the podcast I recorded with the very talented witches at
https://dctheatrescene.com/2007/06/25/meet-the-witches-emily-jacqueline-and-christine/
There were so many great performances this year, and it was so difficult to just pick 5. Joel
Why the 3 wonderful actresses in “The Witches of Eastwick” wasn’t nominated is a sin. Some of the best work in a musical in a long time. At least Marc K. was listed! Witches was a wonderful show and should be the number one show of the season.
See the details page for how the shows and talent were chosen.
Although I voted for Nancy Robinette as best actress for Souvenir, I thought that Kerry Waters, Kate Norris and Heidi Blickenstaff were close runners up. Why wern’t Woolly’s “She Stoops to Comedy” and Studio’s “The Pillowman” on the list of best plays? They were both excellent — as good as “Orson’s Shadow” which was my vote — and much better than most of the others on the list.
These lists do remind us of what excellent and varied theater and actors we have in Washington.
Kind of fun, but ultimately silly idea …. 1 best of each category for the season? impossible! just shows what great theatre we have in town. one note – you break productions into best drama/best musical, but lump the actors together whether from drama or musical. Is such a different beast to perform and difficult to compare to each other, so why not separate out best actor in drama/best in musical?
To add to my earlier comment, how about a category for favorite emerging actor or some such? This would allow a little more choice as to not have to compete against establshed professional actors. Just a thought. 🙂
For best actors, my two favorites are the young actors in Mojo Mickybo. Neither was in the list of choices of best actor. I hope they won’t be overlooked in Helen Hayes awards.
Mr. Lindquist’s name has been corrected. By the way, there is another chance to see his performance in OPUS. We were pleased to see that Washington Stage Guild is remounting the production Sept 6-30. Details at http://www.stageguild.org.
Audience Choice Awards — so glad you are doing this!
I’d love it if DC THEATR ESCENE had a sort of chatroom/discussion board where we could discuss lots of stuff.
There is so much going on . . . for example, remember that several-year brouhaha about the closing of the Source? Wouldn’t it have been fun to have been able to discuss that?
Please consider having such a discussion board!
Just a quick observation…one of the nominees for best actor has his name mispelled. It is Kryztov Lindquist …not as spelled on your list. Hope your awards are a success.
Thanks
With very few exceptions our reviewers have covered or seen nearly all professional productions for the season (180 productions). And, in addition to assignments, we are all regular theatre goers. So we asked Ronnie, Tim, Rosalind, Debbie, Gary, and Janice to rank their top 5 shows, whether they saw them as a reviewer or not. Joel nd I did also.
We have listed everyone’s top 5 choices above. The polls consist of the top 3 of each reviewer’s top 5 lists.
Speaking as one of the nominators, I can say it was very hard limiting myself to just 5 artists or productions. But not nearly as hard as voting in the Polls, where there is only 1 choice!
Hope this explains it. Thanks for asking.
how did the original lists get compiled? Obviously not everything can be listed — but how did you whittle down the lists?
In order to pare down our nominations list, we chose the top 3 nominations from each staff member, which is why some appear on the top 5 nominations list, but not in the final polls. Thank you for finding the error in naming Mr. Morella’s character. We have corrected it.
Two of your listed site folk named Paul Morella for his work in BROOKLYN BOY, however, he isn’t listed as a ‘nominee’. One of the listers mistakenly credits him for the role of “bruce’ who does not exist. The other properly credits Paul with playing the role of “Eric”. Snafu here?
