From Philadelphia – M. Butterfly’s Telly Leung
by Joel Markowitz It’s been 20 years since M Butterfly had NYC audiences gasping, and now, on its 20th anniversary, the Philadelphia Theatre Company has brought the Tony winner to its brand new Suzanne Roberts Theatre directed by Joe Calarco.
Joel Markowitz and Gene Dickerson visited actor Telly Leung in his dressing room as Telly began his transformation into Song Liling.
Telly talks about his preparation for the difficult role, getting advice from M Butterfly’s Tony Award Winning actor and friend B.D. Wong, who played the same role in the original Broadway production, playwright David Henry Hwang’s response to their fresh approach to the musical, and working on the incredible set designed by Michael Fagin.
When the actor playing Gallimard suddenly took ill with the flu, Albany actor Jeff Williams stepped into the role with 6 hours rehearsal. Telly relives the experience for us.
Before turning back to his hour-long transformation into Song Liling, Telly shared his advice on how to sustain a creative, satisfying performing career.
