Its always a tough decision by a theatre to cancel a week of a show. It never reflects well for them. It is purly a bussiness decision and it is mainly based upon the cost of doing the show for the week (Actor Salaries, Stage Manager Salaries, crew, Front of house staff) VS. Income for the week. If as Jen stated they are only getting 30-90 person houses…well it may be a wise bussiness descion for them. It was a huge understaking and I think the theatre is proud of the work they did and I am sure they also learned a lot from the process. Here is to hoping they keep taking a couple risks during the years to come.
I saw the show this afternoon and htere could not have been more than 30 people in the audience, some of which did not return after intermission (though I understand there was apparently an Israel rally downtown). This was a vast undertaking for the theatre and while I very much respected the hard work the actors were doing on the stage, even they could not overcome the material’s shortcomings.
I feel terrible for the actors involved with this production. I understand the show opened with poor reviews, but why would Theater J close the show a week before it was supposed to end. This reflects very poorly on Theater J.
