African Continuum Theatre today announced that it has named JoAnn Williams as the company’s new Executive Director. Williams, a veteran Washington-area theatrical innovator, had been serving as Interim Executive Director of the Dance Institute of Washington.
“We are extremely please to welcome JoAnn to African Continuum Theatre,” Board President Rubie Coles said. “Her successful experience and vision and a manager and a leader coupled with her extensive knowledge of Washington are valuable assets for the company to grow artistically and operationally.”
In addition to leading the Dance Institute, where she instituted several improvements to the Institute’s summer internship program with the DC Department of Employment Services Summer Youth program, Williams is a co-founder of the Uniquely D.C. Festival, and has served as a Director of Public Relations for the DC Youth Orchestra Program and as a Director of the Levine School of Music.
“African Continuum Theatre has a rich history of fostering and nurturing artists and playwrights and I am committed to building and expanding upon this legacy,” Williams said.
African Continuum Theatre had significantly reduced its producing schedule following the resignation last year of Artistic Director Jennifer L. Nelson, but has now scheduled three readings on its 2008 “Fresh Flavas” series, including a play (24, 7, 365) by Ms. Nelson (on October 5), A Soft Escape on October 12, and Holly Down in Heaven on October 19, all at 7.30. Details are on the African Continuum Theatre website.
