The snow is falling on DCTS to celebrate the first in a series of radio plays by The Audible Group, founded by actors Susan Lynskey and James Konicek, sound designer Matthew M. Nielson and myself. We all worked together on this year’s Audience Choice Awards show, and discovered our common love for creating “theatre of the mind”.
A Child’s Christmas in Wales seemed like a natural gift to give the community this holiday season, and 23 DC actors and children, led by Carter Jahncke (Krapp’s Last Tape) as Narrator, can be heard on this lovely re-creation of Dylan Thomas’ poem about Christmas day in Swansea, Wales.
Everyone donated their services to support the women’s shelter N Street Village. From Child’s Christmas co-director Susan Lynskey: “Two years ago fellow actor and friend, Nancy Robinette, introduced me to the inspiring work of N St Village, which she had come to know through its volunteer programs. That year we created a live radio theatre performance as a benefit for the shelter. This year, The Audible Group felt especially compelled to help because in these difficult economic times, charities are struggling to meet even the most basic fundraising goals. As actors, we rarely have ‘means’ but we can give of ourselves. We look forward to creating these radio works as annual part of the DC theatre community’s holiday giving traditions.” There is a donation button in case you are moved to join us in supporting this worthwhile program.
So whether you’re listening at home with a mug of cocoa or a glass of parsnip wine, or listening on your iPod, we wish you happy listening and may your holidays be filled with joy.
