Artomatic, the eclectic festival of performance and art, gets ready to open its five week free festival on May 29th at 55 M Street SE in DC’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood .
Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic transforms an unfinished indoor space into an exciting and diverse arts event. This year, over 900 artists + 100 performances are scheduled. We’ve spotted free films, readings, improve, cabaret, and dance among the Artomatic events as well as children’s activities. According to Artomatic’s blog: “The space is awesome. Completely empty, brand new building + ready to showcase in epic fashion. Artomatic artists will transform nine floors of the raw building space into the largest unjuried creative playground around.”
“With both Artomatic and Major League Baseball within blocks of one another, the Capitol Riverfront will be the go-to location for summertime entertainment in 2009,” said Michael Stevens, executive director of the Capitol Riverfront BID. “Artomatic sets the stage for the type of future festivals and entertainment that you will see in the Capitol Riverfront at the three new parks – Diamond Teague, The Yards Park and Canal Park – which begin opening spring 2009 through 2011.”
Whether you come for the culture, or just want to drop in before or after a Nationals game, it’s easy to get to (it’s on top of the Green Line’s Navy Yard Metro stop) and easy on your schedule. On Fridays and Saturdays, they are open noon to 1 am. Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from noon to 10 pm.
