The Washington Post called The Seven Ages of Mime “A gentle nod to the greats”.
The pop culture impression of a mime, made popular by street performers and the exploitation of such artists in television and movies, has become an image of a man in white-face, trapped in an imaginary box.
Happenstance Theater challenges the perceived stereotypes in a series of family-friendly fun-filled sketches. From a Greco-Roman pantomime through a post-modern clown sketch, Mark Jaster, master of the art of mime, and his partner Sabrina Mandell ply their craft in a panoramic spectrum of materials and styles, including the Italian Renaissance Commedia and the silent film.
The last time this show ran it sold out it’s 2 week run, was extended and sold that out too. Don’t miss it this time ’round!
Performed by Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell
Performed in Theatre 2, Montgomery College Performing Arts Center, 7995 Georgia Ave. Silver Spring MD
Hey, folks,
Thank you for posting this!
If there’s room to include this punchier updated promotional prose, we’d love to see it.
“The Seven Ages of Mime sold out its first extended run in January of ’07. Here’s another chance to see a home-grown master of the Art of Mime at the peak of his game in portrayals of his great historical predecessors.
The Post called it “an hour-long kid-friendly show that draws on great moments of the art….full of classic clowning with riffs on everything from Italian commedia dell’arte to the Marx Brothers.”” And said:
“Jaster’s sturdy body, like Chaplin’s and like Marceau’s (with whom Jaster studied), is a jeweler’s tool, adroit and precise.” And
“Mandell …makes an appealing partner, rough-hewn in the Italian scene, nimble as his mischievous mirror image, touching as they try to deal with a pesky cage.” And
“From nearly every angle, Seven Ages looks like an old-fashioned valentine”
Since the first run, Happenstance Theater has had a string of critically acclaimed hits, and launches this revival with renewed vision and an invigorating depth of skill. ”
Thanks very much for all you do,
-Mark
