TALENT CONTEST TO HIGHLIGHT SIGNATURE OPEN HOUSE
Signature Theatre’s July 17 Open House will feature an American Idol–style talent competition adjudicated by three celebrity judges, the theater announced on Friday. The contest, which the company calls “Signature Idol”, will pit ten solo singers against each other in the 276-seat MAX Theatre, beginning at 5:00 pm.
The company is still accepting applications for the talent competition, and will continue to do so until July 5. Applicants should videotape their rendition of a Broadway song and either send it to Signature or upload it to YouTube and send Signature the link. Since July 5 is a Federal holiday, applicants who intend to deliver their DVD directly to Signature should probably consider hand-delivery to Signature Theatre, 4200 Campbell Avenue, Arlinton, VA. Attn: Signature Idol.
Competition winners will sing in the Open House finale Broadway Concert on the Plaza at 8:30 p.m.
The contest is not open to anyone who has previously sung on a Signature stage.
“What Not to Wear” co-host Clinton Kelly will emcee the talent show and serve on the three-judge panel, along with Signature Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer and Washington Post critic Peter Marks. In addition to his television duties, Kelly, who holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern, has served in editorial positions at Marie Claire and Mademoiselle, and has authored or co-authored two books on fashion.
The Signature Idol competition is one of a panoply of activities which the company has planned for its July 17 Open House. The company has announced plans for performances, master classes, demonstrations, exhibits and kid’s activities, but has not released a detailed schedule yet.
The Open House, which is sponsored by Target, will be free.
