Sunday night, March 11, when the Washington Area Theater Community Honors (WATCH Awards) were presented at the Birchmere, Little Theatre of Alexandria came away the big winner. LTA, now in its 77th season, received a total of 17 awards, 15 of them, including Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Musical, for its production of Hairspray.
The Outstanding Play of 2011 was Marie Jones’ two actor Stones in His Pockets which garnered a total of 4 WATCH Awards for Montgomery Playhouse. Other top multiple winners were The Arlington Players; 5 awards, 4 for The Seagull, and Elden Street Playhouse; 4 awards, 3 for Ain’t Misbehavin’.
In 2011, the 32 community theaters which make up the membership of WATCH produced 40 musicals and 87 plays. Complete details are here.
