Adventure Theatre, the Glen Echo-based children’s theater company is getting used to big announcements. It has been nominated for 13 Helen Hayes Awards this year; has developed such new projects as the Harry Connick Jr. musical The Happy Elf and the upcoming children’s version of the musical Big. Last night, Adventure Theatre announced that they have merged with Musical Theater Center, the Rockville musical theater school.
The combined entity will be called Adventure Theatre MTC.
“It is the right step in the exciting evolution of these two entities,” said Adventure Artistic Director Michael Bobbitt, who will continue as Producing Artistic Director of the combined entity. “The belief that our community and its young citizens deserve to experience excellent theater, whether they are seated in the audience or actively training to become professional musical theatre performers, is what the combined entity was formed on and it is what it will remain devoted.”
“That’s why the merger is such a natural fit,” added Musical Theater Center co-founder Diane Hamilton, who will remain as Artistic Associate of Adventure Theatre MTC.
Musical Theater Center has offered programs since 1985 and currently serves over 1800 students in more than 150 classes. The new company, Adventure Theatre MTC, projects that it will provide training for 3000 students annually in addition to entertaining 75,000 patrons a year.
Adventure Theatre MTC will perform both in Adventures Glen Echo Park facility and continue classes in Musical Theater Center’s Rockville Studios. The current programming schedule for both Adventure Theatre and Musical Theater Center will not be affected by the merger, a spokesperson for Adventure Theatre MTC stated.
