A gorgeous new space deserves an equally stunning production. Everyman Theatre has pulled off this challenging feat with its sparkling renovation of the old Town Theater movie palace and its shattering and laugh-out-loud staging of playwright Tracy Letts’ mama drama August: Osage County.

Zorro
As any fan of Fifty Shades of Grey will tell you, chicks dig guys in black masks. Before Christian Grey, the Dark Knight and other masked morsels, there was Zorro, who also had a way with a sword and a whip, no double-entendres intended. First appearing in 1919 in the pulp-fiction tale The Curse of Capistrano, […]
Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke?
Religion is a touchy subject among people of different religions. It can become an even touchier subject among people of the same religion. At least people with different beliefs can leave it at that: they believe different things. Those who share a religious code, but maybe not the same ardency in adhering to it, can […]
Live Recordings from 54 Below
I was right! Last month, as we put together the annual Holiday Gift Guide, I included a suggestion that a fabulous gift would be one or more of the new live recordings of the cabaret shows at the new New York nightclub, 54 Below.
John Dellaporta takes DC Theatre Scene where it has never gone before
– DC Theatre Scene prides itself on going where our audiences go – to theatres locally, in Baltimore and New York, and to the movies. And now, the newest member of our writing team, actor John Dellaporta, is about to take us where DCTS has never gone before. I’ll let him tell you about it. […]
The Mountaintop
It is not fanciful to compare Dr. Martin Luther King, whose birthday we celebrate today, with Moses. Like the biblical figure, Dr. King led his people out of captivity. Boged (Traitor): An Enemy of the People
One could say Theater J’s current production is drama about a whistle blower trying to protect his community from a dangerous water supply. And it is. But, it seems to me Boged (Traitor): An Enemy of the People is very much about community.
Z! – Would Constellation do an old school Zorro? Of course not!
Zorro is back – dressed all in black, sword at the ready to defend the weak. But there’s a twist. “It’s a Zorro for today,” said Eleanor Holdridge. “This is a grown-up, darker version. We wanted this play to be for Zorro what “The Dark Knight” is to Batman.”
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
It was interesting to see William Inge’s Picnic and Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on successive nights. Both first arrived on Broadway in the mid-fifties, both received the Pulitzer Prize, were great hits on stage and later on film. Both have major female characters at the center, each with unsatisfied yearnings. Both […]
Ambassador Theater inserts some nonsense into our lives
We admit it – when Artistic Director Hanna Bondarewska sent the Ambassador Theater’s press release for their upcoming performances at Flashpoint Gallery, our email back could be capsulized as “huh?”
Tryst extended to February 10th
The critics have fallen hard for Tryst, and it seems audiences agree. Washington Stage Guild just announced that the smart, suspenseful drama, starring Felipe Cabenzas and Emily Townley, originally scheduled to close January 27th, has been given a 2 week extension, and will now run through February 10, 2013 at their Undercroft Theatre.
