Center Stage has announced a change to its schedule: Christopher Durang’s Tony Award-winning comedy, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a Center Stage co-production with Kansas City Repertory Theatre. Previews begin April 16, opening night is April 23, and the scheduled run is through May 25, 2014.
Vania and Sonia and Masha and Spike will replace The Liquid Plain by Naomi Wallace. Center Stage Artistic Director Kwei-Armah, who was originally scheduled to direct the play, explained “The Liquid Plain is a gorgeous and moving piece of theater that I have an enormous love for,” says. “When I learned that I wouldn’t be available to direct, Naomi and I had a conversation and decided that now was just not the time to pursue the Center Stage production.”

Kansas City Rep Artistic Director, Eric Rosen, is set to direct. “I have been a fan of both Christopher Durang and Anton Chekhov since high school, and I am thrilled to be directing this regional premiere in both my new hometown, Kansas City, and my family’s hometown, Baltimore,” says Rosen. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a deeply funny, profoundly smart, and ultimately moving comedy, and I can’t wait to share our co-production with the great audiences at Kansas City Rep and Center Stage.”
Richard Seff, reviewing the New York production for DCTS, wrote “[Durang] is back with a bang with this right on original work with roots in The Cherry Orchard, The Sea Gull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, and anything else in the Chekhov canon that Mr. Durang could get his hands on.”
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike previews at Center Stage on April 16, open on April 23, and runs through May 25, 2014. Tickets start at $19 and can be purchased by calling 410.332.0033, or visiting www.centerstage.org.
