My father was a well-known circus photographer in the twenties and thirties. His work was documented in the book “Step Right Up” and inspired the book and film “Water for Elephants.”
Relevant to this show is the role of the Ringling Brothers Circus in treating so-called freaks as people. They would have been totally ignored by society until Ringling treated them as performers. They were served with white-gloved waiters on the same white linen tablecloths as the other performers and the owner. We may thinks of “freaks” as exploited, but what was the alterntive?
