Six year old theatre critic Iain Armitage is getting plenty of attention on YouTube. His beat is covering DC and Broadway shows. Five months ago, Iain saw Hairspray at Signature, his parents posted his comments on YouTube, and a career was born. He has posted 21 reviews since then, including Bullets Over Broadway and Waiting for Godot. His latest is of Sunday in the Park with George at Signature Theatre.
“It’s so tough being a six year old who loves theatre!” Iain lamented in a commentary after he wasn’t admitted to Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He could watch it on the Tony’s, he argued unsuccessfully, explaining to his fans worldwide why there’d be no review from him of Neil Patrick Harris’ performance.
Iain was born into a theatrical family. His father is Broadway star Euan Morton and his mother is producer Lee Armitage. He enjoys performing, his mother told Ethan Rothstein for ArlNow.com. You may have seen him already. If you check his video stream, you’ll see him performing ‘Defying Gravity’ at Signature’s Open House in 2013 and performing ‘Stars’ from Les Miserables at the Signature Idol competition when he was 4.
How popular is this young critic? We saw Sunday in the Park with George at Signature Wednesday night. Iain, wearing his signature Newsies-style cap, was ordering a cookie at the bar. Do you know who that is?, the bartender whispered. When we didn’t, he brought out his cell phone with Iain’s latest video clip which has had more than 17,000 views.
