The 2014-15 season looks like it will be the busiest in our nine years of covering the theatrical scene. With today’s addition of Peter’s Alley’s three productions, the count of professional productions planned for our area (Washington metro to Baltimore) rises to 278, with full seasons yet to be announced by such producing regulars as No Rules Theatre, Washington Stage Guild, Rorschach Theatre, Pointless Theatre, Spooky Action, and Hub Theatre.
Add to these, six major theatre or opera festivals, and the number of offerings available to Washington area fans is likely to exceed a staggering 475.
Part of this robustness is thanks, of course, to the strength of such festivals as Capital Fringe and DC Black Theatre Festival (we estimated a modest 110 and 40 shows respectively in our total. ) But beyond that is the fact that small companies, such as Unexpected Stage, SeeNoSun Onstage, Alliance for New Music-Theatre and Flying V Productions are committing to season schedules. The most ambitious among them is Pallas Theatre Company, the company specializing in developing new musicals now in its fourth year, which has announced plans to produce a five show season.
