January 26 — theatreWashington will announce the nominees for the 2015 Helen Hayes Awards tonight from the Helen Hayes Gallery in the National Theatre. For the third year in a row, theatregoers everywhere can watch as the nominees are announced along with the packed room of hopeful theatre companies via live webcast starting at 7:30pm.
Where to watch: theatrewashington.org or theatreWashington on YouTube.

This year, theatreWashington has invited six members of the theatre community to make the announcements: DCTS contributing writer and former Artistic Director of WSC Avant Bard Christopher Henley will be joined by Thembi Duncan, producing artistic director for the African Continuum Theatre Company; James Konicek, actor; James Kronzer, award-winning set designer; JoJo Ruf, executive and creative director of The Welders and managing director of the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University; and Kimberly Schraf, actor and co-director of the Honors Conservatory at the Theatre Lab.
These will be the first awards presented under the 2014 regulations in which productions were judged in one of two categories, depending on the number of Equity cast members. The result? Announcers will be challenged to use their best speed reading to get through the nominees for 47 total categories in the one hour announced time for the telecast.
We’ll post the results for you as soon as they become available. And watch for our followup article tomorrow.
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to making 2014 an outstanding year in Washington theatre. And good luck tonight at the awards.
