Two plays recently seen on Washington area stages were honored in London yesterday. On February 22nd at London’s National Theatre, Lynn Nottage received the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Sweat, which enjoyed a celebrated run at Arena Stage, closing last weekend. .
Suzan-Lori Parks was among the nine women finalists for Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1,2 & 3), now in its final week at Round House Theatre. Their plays were chosen from among 150 full play submissions.
Marsha Norman, herself a Blackburn Prize winner (Night Mother) and founding member of The Lilly Awards, said: “The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize has done more than any other single force to get plays be women collected and celebrated, but more importantly, produced. The winner receives $25,000 and a signed and numbered Willem de Kooning print. The finalists received $5,000.
