The votes have been counted, the spinner awards ordered, hopeful nominees are drafting their acceptance speeches. And somewhere, someone knows who will take home one or more of the 47 Helen Hayes awards for the 2015 season. All that’s left for those lucky enough to have their ticket to the Lincoln Theatre on Monday night, May 23rd, is … what to wear for the dance party after.
theatreWashington President and CEO Amy Austin, in charge of her first Helen Hayes Awards ceremony, described the night to Jamila Reddy as “a moment to reflect and to gather together, to acknowledge what was outstanding on our individual stages, and all the collaborative relationships in the community.”
Guests will start arriving at the Lincoln Theatre at 6 pm for the ceremony which will begin at 7:30 pm. E. Faye Butler and Lawrence Redmond will share hosting duties for a night which will present those 47 awards for excellence in roughly two hours. Then the festivities move to the 9:30 Club where resident DJ Lil’e will keep the dance beats coming.
This year’s awards will not be streamed for at-home viewing but DC Theatre Scene will be there covering the awards and party. And count on mobile screens lighting up as audience members tweet out live updates, along with sponsor TodayTix.

“There’s a reason they call this Drama Prom,” Austin says in her interview on theatreWashington. “And it’s not just because of the dresses. It’s a fun night. And there is so much to celebrate.”
