Sex, lawyers, and slamming doors — when opera meets the modern sitcom, it leads to comedy of operatic proportions! The Forgotten Opera Company is pleased to present the world premiere of Do Not Disturb at this year’s Capital Fringe Festival.

In this fast-paced farce, junior attorney Ethan Rosenblum, calls out “sick” to propose to his girlfriend at a romantic lakeside resort. Unfortunately, his boss, George Rosenburg, is meeting his mistress, the judge, at the same bed and breakfast as he drives his niece back to college.
Meanwhile, Rosenburg’s wife has enlisted her niece to spy on his extramarital activities and collect evidence for her divorce case. Although the innkeeper is dying to impress Rosenburg, her teenage employee is too engrossed in his cellphone to bother getting anyone’s room number right. With compromising situations and mistaken identities set to a modern operatic score, it may be the most fun you can have in 90 minutes!
Do Not Disturb is the first collaboration between composer Sean Pflueger and librettist Laura Fuentes. Pflueger’s first opera, Children in the Mist, premiered at the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival, and was based on Stephen King’s horror novella The Mist. Hailed for its “fine, contemporary musical score” (MD Theatre Guide) and “beautiful melodies,” (DC Metro Theatre Arts), Children in the Mist was awarded Best of the Capital Fringe from DC Metro Theatre Arts, and a Top Pick by Huffington Post and Brightest Young Things.
Building on the success of his first opera, Pflueger was interested in writing a comedy inspired by both modern sitcoms and classic farce. Colleague Michael Hock helped create a structural outline for the story, and librettist Laura Fuentes crafted text to reflect the humor and pathos of modern life. With themes of work/life balance, ambitious and driven characters, and plenty of legal humor, the piece holds special relevance for DC-area audiences.

The Forgotten Opera Company (the alter-ego of the Victorian Lyric Opera Company for putting on contemporary operas) presents Do Not Disturb at the Atlas Performing Arts Center during the Fringe Festival. Don’t miss this exciting premiere!
