Washington DC’s 2020 Helen Hayes Awards, originally scheduled for May 18, has been postponed, theatreWashington, the nonprofit organization responsible for the Awards ceremony has announced. The ceremony will be moved to August 24.
The postponement is because of the current coronavirus epidemic, which most experts believe will last at least eight weeks. “Our industry and communities are facing great uncertainty and we know it best to act with caution and concern,” the organization stated in an unsigned entry on its website.
theatreWashington originally scheduled the Awards to be held at the Waterfront’s Anthem, where it was held in 2019 will be held there in August.
The Awards will celebrate excellence in theater during the 2019 calendar year. In February, theatreWashington announced the nominees, including 27 from the Olney Theatre Center and 11 for Constellation Theatre’s Little Shop of Horrors.
