With theatres shuttered for the foreseeable future and all of us practicing social distancing during the pandemic, the connection between artists and audiences has been broken. That’s why DC Theatre Scene has created SCENE TV, a new IGTV channel on Instagram.
Through SCENE TV, artists share how they are coping with the circumstances brought on by COVID-19. For instance, actress and vocalist Awa Sal Secka wrote and performed a rap to help theatreWashington raise funds for the Taking Care COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. Lynn Sharp-Spears, a performer, director, teacher, and designer, shows how she’s created new sculptures during her time at home.
The IGTV channel also serves as a way for artists to share what comforts them most during this time of uncertainty. In one post, actress Tia Shearer reads aloud her favorite poem, “Mornings at Blackwater,” by Mary Oliver.
“Though this health crisis has separated us, we hope that SCENE TV will be a virtual connection between audiences and our creative communities,” says Lorraine Treanor, editor of DC Theatre Scene. “We thank the artists for inviting us into their homes and sharing their experiences.”
