Emergent Seed, an arts organization created in response to the impact of coronavirus on the DC area creative community, is closing its second round of $500 microgrant applications on Friday, October 9th at 12pm ET. The competition is for original work in one of four categories: Poetry, Storytelling, Songs, and Instrumental. All emerging writers and composers over 18 who currently reside in the greater DC Metro area can apply for free with a short video of their original work.

In addition to the $500 grants winners for each category, Emergent Seed also awards $150 grants to its honorees.
Emergent Seed’s first microgrants were announced via YouTube in July. Among them were Projections Designer Kelly Colburn (Poetry) and performer Dylan Arredondo (Storytelling).
Artists winning the $500 microgrants give Emergent Seed a three year license to the work. This licensing arrangement does not extend to recipients of the $150 microgrants.
Submissions are due by noon on Friday, October 9. Emergent Seed is prioritizing financial need at this time and asks that creatives who are practicing artists (including students) who have been financially affected by coronavirus closures apply for a microgrant. Applications will consist of 2-5 minute videos of the applicants’ original work. To be eligible, applicants must live in DC or one of the 6 surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia consisting of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Montgomery, Prince George’s, be 18-35 years old, or if over 35, describe why they are an emerging artist.
