We are proud to announce that Washington theater patrons José Alberto Uclés and Tom Noll are the 2025 recipients of the Gary Maker Audience Award for their enthusiastic support of, and vital and colorful presence in, Washington area theaters.
The Gary Maker Audience Award is the only recognition given by any theater community in the nation to an audience member for their non-financial support of theater.
The Gary Maker Audience Award was established by DC Theatre Scene in 2011. It recognizes those who are passionate, involved, informed and grounded in their love for theater and lend their time and personal support to encourage people to attend and to see that theater in the Washington area not only survives, but thrives.
DC Theatre Scene presented its last Gary Maker Audience Award in 2019 before ceasing to publish in 2020. Susan Galbraith, a former DCTS writer and Artistic Director of Alliance for New Music-Theatre, offered to continue the award. We are very grateful to her, and our hats are off to the new committee. The 2024 award was bestowed on Greg Williams.
Uclés and Noll will receive the award at GALA Hispanic Theatre, which along with Theater Alliance nominated them. The presentation will be presented at 7:30pm, before the May 3 performance of Choke by Emilio Infante, and followed by a reception.
The nominees “bring incredible social cheerleading to the whole theater community…their energy and positivity encourage others to engage with our work,” Theater Alliance noted in its nomination. GALA pointed out that they “advocate for all theaters when it involves support from the City.”
In addition to their enthusiastic support, Uclés and Noll are known for their extraordinary haberdashery, often on display in theater and non-theater settings alike.
