It’s the rare filmmaker whose name comes to stand for a whole style of filmmaking, but legendary Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman brought such a level of psychological depth to his work that he forever ensured any such film that followed would be dubbed “Bergmanesque.” It makes sense that such a penetrating writer of the human condition would translate well to the stage, and now acclaimed director Ivo van Hove is doing just that.
In honor of Bergman’s centennial, van Hove brings a double-bill of After The Rehearsal & Persona to the stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Fittingly, both dramas delve into the messy lives of theater artists and are chock-full of the kind of intense performances one expects from Bergman and van Hove.
