“This Bayadère is a magnificent statement about what the Mariinsky troupe has meant and still prodigiously means after so many years.” —Financial Times
A spectacular evocation of the Romantic ideal, the “Kingdom of the Shades” scene in La Bayadère is one of the most spellbinding and iconic in all of ballet–and the Mariinsky is known the world over for doing it best. When the legendary company last performed this classic here in 2008, the engagement was a sold-out smash, leaving ballet lovers craving an encore. Nearly a decade later, the return of the Mariinsky’s La Bayadère is an exciting event you can’t afford to miss, presented as part of the company’s celebration of Marius Petipa’s 200th anniversary.
Replete with forbidden love, shocking betrayal, and a spectral voyage to the afterlife, this enchanting journey to a fabled past radiates with colorful characters, vibrant sets and costumes, and virtuosic moments. But nothing will prepare you for the entrance of the “Shades,” a seemingly endless line of ghostly maidens in white, floating in perfect synchronicity across the stage. Petipa created La Bayadère for the Mariinsky more than 140 years ago, and this dazzling ballet continues to be “theirs” well into the 21st century.
