Hamlet in the mind of a teenage girl
“to tell my story” takes the story of Hamlet into the one place even more dangerous and fraught than medieval Denmark: the mind of a teenage girl. In a world where political backstabbing plays out on Facebook and Teen Vogue is helping lead the progressive resistance, this is the reimagining of Shakespeare’s Danish detective story that we need.
When Elsie receives a disturbing message that suggests her father may have been murdered by her new stepfather, she sets out on an increasingly high-stakes quest that takes her from the hallways of her high school to the wild and colorful world of online fanfiction, seeking confirmation of her suspicions by retelling her story in increasingly outlandish ways while her friend Horatio looks on in horror. Part comedy part tragedy part Shakespeare part really really bad online fan fiction, all something undreamed of in most philosophies.
A world premiere from satirist and playwright Alexandra Petri. Called by Longreads “The Only Op-Ed Columnist You Need Right Now” Petri’s regular CompPost column in the Washington Post regularly delights readers with its quick wit. She’s an International Pun Champion who regularly nerds out about many things, including Star Wars (to the point of being the mind behind the Twitter sensation Emo Kylo Ren).
