Fans of Landless Theatre’s campy musicals rejoice! Landless is back in DC, and back at their old haunt, the tiny stage at DCAC, with the DC premiere of The Book of Merman.
That’s right. Mormon door to door adventures, wrapped up in a celebrated musical parody.
Two young Mormon missionaries ring their last doorbell of the day, which happens to be the home of Ethel Merman, who happens to be looking for a new song. In return, she helps them discover the kinder and gentler values of old Broadway and true romance.
Leo Schwartz’s songs parody Book of Mormon and such Merman classics as Annie Get Your Gun, Gypsy and Anything Goes. “Most People” channels “Some People” from Gypsy), “You’re The Best” ( “You’re The Top” from Anything Goes) etc.
They’ll have you from “Hello.”
The Book of Merman
book and lyrics by Leo Schwartz.
Directed by Andrew Lloyd Baughman.
Starring Ally Jenkins as “Ethel,” Ernie Achenbach as “Elder Braithwaite,” and Helen Hayes Award Nominee Charles Johnson as “Elder Shumway.”
