Continuing the Kennedy Center’s presentations of some of America’s best Nutcrackers, this year’s version by the Kansas City Ballet is a truly opulent D.C. premiere. With elegant set design by Alain Vaes, costumes by the renowned Holly Hynes, and live music from the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, the production surprises and astonishes.
From the moment we meet toymaker Drosselmeier in his workshop, the elaborate sets, sparkling costumes, and impressive choreography will take your breath away. All of your favorite moments are here: the grand pas de deux between the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, the battle between the Nutcracker Prince and villainous Mouse King, and of course the parade of international dances in the Land of the Sweets. Plenty of inventive twists also abound, from a toy bear that comes to life and a grandfather with Hip Hop moves to a line of giant Russian nesting dolls.
As with every Nutcracker, dozens of local children will take the stage–this year portraying adorable bunnies, lambs, dolls, soldiers, and angels. Still others will lend their voices to the glistening Snow Scene. It all adds up to a delicious ballet feast impossible to resist!
