The dark genius of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories and poetry can be enjoyed on your own, reading by flickering candle light just to add to the experience. Another way to enjoy a selection of Poe’s most popular tales is to let the fine folks at Molotov Theatre Group bring the nightmarish tales to life.
Horror the norm at Molotov Theatre Group
Don’t let the name fool you. As part of its tradition of bringing the best Grand Guignol (an almost forgotten genre of French theater horror) to the stage, the Molotov Theatre Group is presenting Anthony Neilson’s morbidly themed Normal.
Normal
In 1931, Peter Kurten terrorized Germany with little reason. Other than it sexually gratified him. Trolling Dusseldorf, he raped, beat, and murdered without prejudice. Men, women, and children. No one was safe from his bloodlust.
Extremities
Molotov Theatre Group sounds like a place where a play might explode. The company’s motto is “Art Imitates Death,” and though that assertion doesn’t make sense to me, it’s true that their production of Extremities, a play by William Mastrosimone which became a movie starring Farah Fawcett, feels dangerous at first.
The Swing Set with Alex Cook
— Can a man follow two passions at the same time? A familiar DC actor supports his theatre company by launching a new career – Alex Cook seems a little like every one of us who harbors a secret love or obsession, only he bears his for all to see. And it would be very […]
Molotov goes to the movies for its next murderous season
Three macabre plays which were later transformed into movies will make up the 2013-2014 season for Molotov Theatre Group, the company announced this Valentine’s Day.
Molotov has its way with Julius Caesar
Like many of you, I looked forward to the work that Molotov Theatre Group – Washington’s Grand Guignol theater – would be doing on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar because of the exquisite sensitivity Molotov has exhibited in the past for subtle emotions and the complex social and political undercurrents which mark the work of the great […]
Stage Manager wanted for Molotov’s Julius Caesar
Molotov Theatre Group seeks a non-equity Stage Manager for its first show of the 2012 season: Julius Caesar, directed by Kevin Finkelstein and adapted by Shawn Northrip. This is a good opportunity for a younger Stage Manager to receive some professional experience with an ensemble-driven company. They’re looking for an individual who wants to work with […]
Fat Men in Skirts
Before I talk about Fat Men in Skirts we need to talk about the company that is putting it on, Molotov Theatre Group, because more than anything else, this is just Molotov being Molotov.
Morgue Story
Few things make theatre audiences more tense than dead bodies. Well, make that dead bodies played by live bodies, since it’s rare to see a fake dead body pass muster on stage. Why bother, when you have willing actors ready to look so believably, humanly dead? A corpse has the power to set us rigid […]
Blood Sweat and Fears III
Blood Sweat & Fears III – The Red Velvet Curtain This latest collaboration between Molotov Theatre Group and Shawn Northrip is designed with a particular type of audience in mind. You know who you are. You’ve just come back from the pleasures of “Jackass 3-D” and you’ve not quite exhausted your taste for the startling, […]
The Horrors of Online Dating
Molotov Theatre Group taught me a valuable lesson: When an usher greets you with a program in one hand and a plastic poncho in the other, get ready to scream and/or duck. Molotov’s production of Shawn Paul Northrip’s The Horrors of Online Dating takes the audience on a darkly funny, musical romp through one woman’s […]
