There were some big surprises last night at the Helen Hayes Awards. Constellation’s bet on Avenue Q paid off big at the box office, and with the judges, earning it a top spot in number of awards for any production (7) along with Shakespeare Theatre’s Salomé.
For the first time in the history of the Helen Hayes Awards, a production subtitled in English, Yerma at GALA Hispanic Theatre, was among the most favored (6 awards), including Outstanding Play. Happenstance Theater emerged with 3 awards, including Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Ensemble for IMPOSSIBLE! A Happenstance Circus, an achievement shared only with Kiss Me Kate at Shakespeare Theatre Company. While they don’t appear on the list below, a great debt is owed to the Women’s Voices Festival, without whom we may not have seen Yael Farber’s Salomé or Martyna Majok’s Ironbound.
