Why should the kids have all the angst? As part of the events surrounding Keegan Theatre’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Blacktop Theatre is joining them to stage a real live spell-off for adults, the one night only Blacktop Theatre Spelling Bee.

On June 20 at 8pm, five lucky audience members will get the chance to join ten DC theatre artists (as yet unannounced) on the Spelling Bee set at Church Street Theatre. Here’s how Blacktop describes the spelling challenges they have in store: “Our words, sentences, and definitions will be shamelessly contemporary, proudly DC-centric, and yes, a little bit spicy.” So Merriam-Webster might not be your best reference source.
Blacktop Theatre is no stranger to comedy or the dictionary. Their upcoming Fringe comedy Pun: (n) a play on words follows five of the dictionary’s keywords as they revel in their superior status — until a dark prophesy warns that their power trip will soon come to an end.
The Bee starts at 8pm. Admission is pay what you can. A drawing will be held at 7:50pm to determine which five audience members will have the chance to spell off against the players onstage. At Church Street Theatre, 1742 Church St NW, Washington, DC.
