All things Fringe must come to an end. But as with everything else in the festival, the closing night of the 8th Annual Capital Fringe was cause for celebration last night at the Baldacchino Gypsy Tent Bar. The hangout HQ for the festival, noticeably livelier and most bustling last night, filled up with revelers for the annual closing night party, which included the presentation of the 2013 Audience Awards, sponsored by TheaterMania.
“Before we get started, I just want to let everyone know that awards are not important,” said Julianne Brienza, Capital Fringe’s Executive Director, as she stood onstage at the Tent. Her playful tone was telling — this is a city of artists whose competitive streaks can get the better of them in situations less relaxed and communal than this one.
Over 6,000 people voted online. Here are the awards results:
Best Comedy: presented to The DC State Players for The DC State Players Presents Agamemnon
Best Drama: presented to Grain of Sand Theatre for Tell-Tale
Best Musical Theatre & Opera: presented to Unmanned Stagecraft Productions for The Young Wife
Best Dance & Physical Theatre: presented to Brynn Tucker for her solo show A Guide To Dancing Naked
Best Overall Show in 2013 Summer Festival: presented to Belle Epoque Productions and the New Musical Foundation for One Night in New York!
The Director’s Award (sponsored by Washington City Paper and selected by Julianne Brienza): presented to Not A Robot Theatre Co. for The Clocks and to Disco Jesus Productions for Disco Jesus and the Apostles of Funk.
Congratulations to the winners, and to everyone who came out to support Fringe, DC Theatre Scene, each other, and the scores of exciting new shows brought to life this summer. Fringe on!
