The Helen Hayes Awards found a new home and a new format this year: Making the ceremony a continuous cocktail party from seven to midnight, punctuated by three “acts” of awards presentations, each hosted by a different pair of some of DC’s favorite performers. The National Building Museum was regularly rocking with a vibrant dancefloor and DJ spinning throughout the evening, and an onstage band playing during the award presentations.
I was on the ground during the whole evening. Snapping pictures of the stage, the crowd, the dance floor, and everything in between. The whole scene accomplished what theatreWashington had set out to do in juggling the format and forum of the show: Creating a party atmosphere in which all sectors of the Washington theatre community could run together, celebrate each other, talk, schmooze, and dance it out in style!
