Size Doesn’t Matter – 7 Shorts by DC Playwrights was born out of a brainstorming session of members of Fully Charged Productions – which is a producing organization formed by alumni of the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. These actors meet throughout the year to work on various self-producing projects including the Capital Fringe Festival.

We have had some success producing shows that are an entertainment of short plays including Shel Silverstein and Theresa Rebeck. This year, one of our number suggested local playwrights and the idea was an instant hit with the group as we hope it will be for our Fringe audience as well. Let’s support our local playwrights!
We asked not quite a dozen local playwrights if they wanted to play with us and got really enthusiastic responses. We asked for short plays that were fun and “Fringe-y” and that would be best served by great storytelling as opposed to huge production elements. We want a chance for our actors to shine with the playwrights’ words, and when you have to put up and take down your set in 15 minutes huge production can be a very bad idea.
We had no idea how enthusiastic a response we would get – we had about fifty short plays submitted and as we read them had to fight the urge to find a common theme, and simply select the plays we thought our Fringe audience would enjoy and allow our actors to show off their storytelling chops.
Size Doesn’t Matter is an awesome collection of seven short plays by DC playwrights Mario Baldessari, Renee Calarco, Zachary Fernebok and John Morogiello that are introspective, with lots of quirky and a good dose of slap your knee funny. Our collection of plays are aided by four blocks, four stools, a copy paper box full of props and ten Conservatory alumni under the keen direction of Ray Ficca.
We are pretty sure that Size Doesn’t Matter will draw an audience of folks who already know and love our playwrights – we hope it will also introduce their work to folks who might not yet know that we grow some darned great playwrights right here at home!
