The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence

Harnessing the success of a sold-out, three-week, Off-Broadway run in New York City, Step Afrika! brings its 2017-2018 season to a close with nine performances of The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence in Washington, D.C. from June 8 to June 17 at the Hartke Theatre.

The Migration conceptualizes Jacob Lawrence’s groundbreaking “The Migration Series” as an interdisciplinary work with lightning-fast claps, intricate footwork, percussive chants, and perfect synchronicity.  The performance blends body percussion, dance, spoken word, projected images of Lawrence’s paintings and live music to chart the story of African-American migrants moving from the South to the North.

Fusing gospel music with tap, stepping and gorgeous gumboot dancing – this is movement as communal celebration.”  –New York Times
