Joel Markowitz interviews the composer/lyricist/librettist Tim Acito backstage at Arena Stage
This concludes our three part series of the journey of The Women of Brewster Place from Alliance Theatre in Atlanta to its opening here the Kreeger Theatre at Arena Stage.
Joel schmoozes with Tim Acito about his personal journey from convincing Gloria Naylor to allow him to musicalize her novel, to meeting Molly Smith, to composing the score, and to finally see it in full production.
The play takes place in the summer of 1975. Tim recounts what artists and composers he was listening to on AM radio that summer and how they influenced his score for The Women of Brewster Place.
Includes portions of “Kiswanna Browne” and “This Ain’t a Prayer”.
