Theatre Shelf, a column dedicated to recommending books, CDs and DVDs, launches today, written by Brad Hathaway, one of Washington’s favorite theatre writers.

Among his many contributions to Washington theatre, Brad may be best known for his pioneering Web site, Potomac Stages, in which he nearly single-handedly covered area professional and community theatre for eight years. Brad now follows his first loves – musical theatre, design and orchestrations. He is writing for such publications as American Theatre Magazine, The Sondheim Review and Live Design, while continuing to review for newspapers in Northern Virginia and filing a monthly column in The Hill Rag in Washington. He’s a member of the Executive Committee of the American Theatre Critics Association.
A longtime friend to DCTS, when Brad suggested this column to us, we jumped at the chance to feature him. Look for a new Brad Hathaway review in Theatre Shelf every Tuesday.
Brad,
Glad to see you’re doing reviews again that are available to us here in DC. I enjoyed your remarks about Finians Rainbow–
“No one strained to land a big note. No one punched a punch line. No one struggled for attention. As a result, the qualities of the material – yes, the charm of the piece – shone through and sparkled all night long. What a delight!”
I’ve been watching Theatre Talk [Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins] most nights at midnight on Maryland Public Television (MPT-2) and on WHUT-TV (10:30 PM on Sundays). A few nights ago was a rebroadcast of Peter Marks talking about Ragtime. Do you get Theatre Talk wherever you are? Where? Sausalito? Tiburon?
You should get on that show next time you’re in New York.
Two weeks ago they had a program (rebroadcast) celebrating Yip Harburg with Theater historians Michael Korie and Arthur Perlman.
I miss going to Potomac Stages and catching up on things.
All good wishes,
Bob
This is a great addition! Thanks!
