Today on Metro Connection, WAMU 88.5 listeners will learn about the Gary Lee Maker Award and hear from its just- announced first recipient, long time theatre supporter, David Tannous. Metro Connection producer Rebecca Sheir found the story of creating an award for an audience member a perfect fit for this week’s theme ‘Outside the Box’.

Gary Lee Maker was a gracious and enthusiastic audience member. DC Theatre Scene created this Award to recognize those who, like him, are passionate, involved, informed and grounded in their love for theater and lend their time and personal support to see that theatre in the Washington area not only survives, but thrives.
Each year, nominations for the Gary Lee Maker Award will be made by the theatres themselves, with the final selection chosen by a committee. The recipient receives the Award – a stunning work of glass art by Teddie Hathaway – along with a year’s subscription to the theatre making the nomination at a curtain speech.
In the Black Box Theatre of Artisphere, Sheir sat down with Christopher Henley and Jay Hardee of Washington Shakespeare Company, Susan Absher, a member of this year’s selection committee, Lorraine Treanor of DC Theatre Scene and David Tannous. The segment was taped in the Black Box Theater at Artisphere.
