The Inkwell, one of Washington DC’s significant resources for new play development, is asking playwrights from across the country to send in their plays for Inkwell’s 2011 open call. The submission process will be from September 3d from October 9th.
They expect hundreds of submissions and are simultaneously putting out a call for readers to assist with the selection process. We asked whether this process was truly open to audiences as well as theatre makers, to which Inkwell Artistic Director Jessica Burgess responded with a resounding Yes!
Readers, – a better word Inkwell board member Manny Strauss thinks would be ‘Explorers’ – will receive online training in how to read and assess plays in progress, and can then choose the number of plays they’d like to read. The training lasts an hour, and will provide an overview of the online submissions process, Inkwell’s approach to reading and assessing plays in progress, and the important role one can play in supporting playwrights and the future of American theatre.
